Things to see and do in Portsmouth
Visit the Historic Dockyard, where you can explore some important ships from the past such as the Mary Rose and HMS Warrior 1860. over here you will also find the Royal Navy Museum which is worth a wander as are the Action Stations which provide an interactive atmosphere in which one can learn about the navy. There is also an information centre for visitors which is a useful service to plan out your tourist adventures.
A monumental construct of Portsmouth is the Spinnaker Tower, which cost a great £21 million to take its form. It has a height of 170m on top of the harbour and it can be climbed at three different levels to get a view of the city and surrounding area. There is an admission fee to enter and use the high speed lift that can take you to the top of the tower.
A touch of history is provided by Southsea Castle, which goes all the way back to 1544 when it was constructed by Henry VIII during a time of fortifications when the purpose was to safeguard the coasts of the country from invaders.
Also make a trip to the Royal Marines Museum in Southsea, which is open most days of the year. Here you can explore the stories of the Royal Marines through a set of interactive displays. The actual building was previously used as one of the grandest Officers’ Messes in the country back in the 1860s when it was first constructed. The interior is a most stunning sight with large paintings, ornate ceilings and a luxurious staircase.
Only five miles away from Portsmouth is Portchester Castle, which is of great importance being one of the finest Roman fortifications in Northern Europe. It was built in the Norman period from Roman bricks which are thought to be recycled and although the original church is still fully functional, many weddings have been held here as well.
If you want to indulge in the countryside in this part of England, make your way to Portsdown Hill which allows you to take in the glorious views and experience the atmosphere of a traditional pub.
